Limpopo Province, 1998

Limpopo Province, 1998

On 23 March 1998, Limpopo, South Africa’s northernmost province, was granted its coat of arms. The shield symbolises the government’s commitment to protecting human rights. It is yellow with a green baobab tree, representing the strength and steadfastness of the people, and green at the top with rounded crenelations, representing mountain ranges and the province’s rich agricultural lands. The crest has a red and gold coronet, symbolising royalty, with five cycad leaves; the cycad is an endangered plant and indicates the preservation and continuation of traditional leadership. Two buffalo, representing unity, strength and political stability, support the coat of arms. The black and green base has the motto “PEACE UNITY AND PROSPERITY” on a white scroll.
